The teacher divides the students into groups of three. Then the teacher gives each group a beginning of a sentence such as "Last summer when...". Each student continues and writes down their own story. After about four minutes, the students switch his or her story with another student in the same group. Now the teacher writes a word on the whiteboard that each student needs to use to continue the story. The teacher now gives each student about four minutes to read what the other student wrote and to continue the story. After about four minutes the students switch stories once again, get a new word from the teacher, read what the other students wrote and continue the story. This exercise goes on until the teacher decides to stop it, but approximately thirty minutes will be enough.
